If you're a solitary developer building a game with an eye toward putting it on the Wii, the people who helped create Nintendo's new Wii MotionPlus Control want to help you out.
The Mountain View-based AiLive group has built a tool that easily explains the subtleties of the improved tracking hardware. This is accomplished through the inclusion of an intuitive GUI, 1:1 tracking of position and orientation moves, and cool virtual demos. This means virtual lightsabers, crash test dummies, and severe ninja blade mimicking. Who said making a game was boring stuff?
The new Wii MotionPlus control is supposed to increase the accuracy of
movement tracking for games, though some people have already expressed
concern over its increased accuracy. What if it becomes too hard to
make a simple decision, like throwing a virtual ball? According to
AiLive, developers should be able to build in controls for the motion
discrepancies of people with varying skill, while keeping the accuracy
and flexibility intact.
For example, if a developer is building a game that includes a
character wielding a blade and a whip at the same time, they can place
a move that will place a downward slicing motion for a kill on the
sword only. In another shown in the video above, a lightsaber floats in
space and reflects the moves of the player in real-time.
So far, only a couple of games have been announced for the new motion hardware, but expect that to change soon.
