Whither Nissan? Why Brand’s Not Coming to Detroit

DETROIT - Okay, here's what happened. Nissan North America announced last November that it would not come to the North American International Auto Show next week in Detroit, and that it had canceled out of the Chicago International Auto Show in February, as well. Just before Thanksgiving, Nissan changed its mind, and announced that Chicago-area dealers would run Nissan/Infiniti stands at the show.
In December, Metro Detroit Nissan/Infiniti dealers offered to do the same. Nissan North America declined, asking Michigan dealers to respect the decision. "We're Nissan's dealer-partners," Ann Arbor Nissan dealer Doug Fox told me. They gave no argument.
The story popped up after the holidays when someone noticed that Nissan and Infiniti were left off the NAIAS floor plan.
So, why Chicago and not Detroit? "Chicago is fairly unique," a Nissan spokesman says. He declined to give any specific reasons, but there will be some cost involved. Nissan will supply the Chicago show with a new Cube. It won't be on-sale yet, so area dealers can't take one from inventory. Same with the Nissan GT-R. While it is on sale, the car typically is pre-sold. Dealers don't keep them in stock (and you wouldn't want to take delivery of one after it's been fingered by journalists and local consumers).
It all seems to come down to cost. Chicago is a much bigger market, especially for Nissan, than Detroit. While turntables and signage and shipping pre-production models cost next to nothing by 2008 auto show standards, in 2009, every dollar counts.
The show will go on. NAIAS has filled Nissan's space by moving Kia into the better spot, and by adding exhibits from Bertone and the Center for Creative Studies, one of the nation's premier design schools. In these few days before the press preview begins, however, it's clear that this year's Detroit show will be much more sober, in every sense of the word, than any of the previous 13 shows I've covered.
Yep, the parties and presentations are down, drastically. You'll see nothing like the rodeo staged on the street in front of Cobo Hall last year to introduce the 2009 Dodge Ram. Production and concept cars and trucks will be introduced, but they'll emphasize fuel economy, clean emissions and value more than sex appeal and performance. It is, sigh, too much a business story, this year, but we'll be there, reporting on the cars and trucks.

Sharper Image Is Back
[CES 2009] Sometime in the middle of last year, the tech world was abuzz with news that Sharper Image will be closing down, holding fire sales in virtually every brick and mortar store. Well, they're back with a vengeance this time round, retaining the brand name but with a whole new slew of executives on board (different captain this time round to steer the ship, boys and girls). Maybe they should've called it the Sharpest Image if they plan to outdo its predecessor. Well, it is nice to see a familiar name hanging around, rising from the ashes like a phoenix although now is probably not the best time to be in business...

Minoru 3D Webcam On The Showfloor
[CES 2009] At long last, the Minoru 3D webcam is finally available in the flesh. Yes, we know that it has begun to ship and we have covered this device a few times in the past, but there is just something about seeing it in real life for the first time that brings a tear to the eye. OK, maybe it isn't that dramatic, but you get the picture. I've tried the 3D glasses (they're made from carboard and are extremely fragile - maybe that's why each purchase comes with 5 of those) with the Minoru and the effect is a traditional 3D - you won't be able to last long before developing a headache. Of course, it does help when you have a cute bird with a hot English accent promoting your device amidst a sea of other booths...

Sign Language Translator
[CES 2009] While we have the benefit of machine translators on the Internet, there is one very crucial group of people who lose out - those who rely on sign language. Fear not - the Sign Language Translator from Krown Manufacturing, Inc. offers a new way of communicating with your friends who rely on sign language. This device stores more than 3,5000 words in sign language and comes with a stylus where you can input the English word to retrieve a video of the equivalent in American Sign Language. The device features a 320 x 240 touchscreen display and is USB rechargeable, capable of running for up to half a dozen hours on a single charge. It will be released sometime in the middle of this year for $199, and owners can benefit from free software updates in the future. Unfortunately, since it is not able to string together a sentence in sign language just yet, you'd best have a basic working knowledge of American Sign Language and rely on this as a reference instead.
