Americans are terrified of getting older, and nowhere is that paranoia more evident than in the entertainment and fashion industries, where youth is worshipped. But a cultural shift may be taking place, as several top fashion magazines will feature over-40 actresses on their coveted September covers. In a first, Jennifer Aniston, 41, covers the September 2010 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, while Julia Roberts, 42, covers Elle, and Vogue will reportedly feature Halle Berry, 44, on its Sept. cover. The September issues of fashion magazines are typically their biggest of the year, ad-wise, so the fashion industry’s putting its money where its mouth is makes a bold statement. So why the shift? Magazine editors say readers aspire to be like women like Jen Aniston because she’s accomplished and more comfortable in her own skin because she’s older.
