Mel Gibson, Sean Penn and Robert Downey Jr. Team with Jodie Foster for Charity Poker Tournament

Mel Gibson, he of the secretly recorded rants, is teaming with reformed Hollywood bad boys Sean Penn and Robert Downey Jr. on a celebrity poker tournament to benefit Mending Kids International.

Joining them will be Jodie Foster, who has steered clear of well-publicized drug battles, anti-Semitic tirades and scuffles with the paparazzi in her four-decade-long career.

Foster was one of Gibson's most stalwart defenders during his recent legal skirmish with ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva and has teamed with the actor on films such as "Maverick" and "The Beaver." Downey Jr. also rallied to his friend's cause, most memorably in 2011 while accepting the American Cinematheque Award. During his speech he urged Hollywood to forgive Gibson.

"Allow him to pursue this art without shame," Downey Jr. said at the ceremony.

The charity event, "Four Kings & An Ace," will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at The London hotel in West Hollywood. Mending Kids International provides surgical care to children around the world, assisting with everything from fixing congenital heart defects to repairing orthopedic abnormalities.

Legal and public relations issues aside, Gibson has been an active supporter of children's and ...

Mel Gibson Says ‘Maccabees’ Script Sucked, Accuses Eszterhas of Sabotage

Mel Gibson has fired another volley in his seemingly never-ending war of words with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas over their abandoned film project "The Maccabees."

In an interview with Coming Soon, Gibson unloads both barrels on his former partner Eszterhas, saying the screenwriter took forever to turn in a script -- and when he did, it was "heinous."

"Okay, so a guy gets paid to write a screenplay and doesn't turn anything in for 14 months," Gibson told the website. "That's a serious problem. Not even an outline so I lost my nutter with him. I developed a Viking script [for the project 'Berserker'] almost a year after he started, and I already had a second draft and he hadn't even given me an outline. And he was at my home on a working holiday and he didn't even bring one word."

During the interview, Gibson insisted he had provided Eszterhas with plenty of fodder for the script in the form of story ideas, imagery and dialogue -- little of which made it into the final (and, according to Gibson, hastily assembled) script.

Mel Gibson’s 78-Year-Old Stepmother Says He Terrorized Her

Add Mel Gibson's stepmother to the list of people who claim to have been screamed at and menaced by the actor.

Joye Hicks Gibson, the wife of the actor's father Hutton Gibson, filed a request for a temporary restraining order with Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, claiming that the actor and notorious hothead is trying to force her out of the home that she shares with her husband, and manipulated his father into filing for divorce from her.

The 78-year-old also accuses Gibson of "terrorizing" her, recounting multiple instances in which he allegedly lost his temper with her and left her fearing for her physical safety.

According to Joye -- who has been married to Hutton Gibson since December 2001 -- her husband filed divorce papers in June, but she asserts in her request for the restraining order that Mel "manipulated Hutton while he was in a weakened physical or mental state due to illness."

Joe Eszterhas Claims Death Threats, Calls on Mel Gibson to Denounce Anti-Semitic Supporters

The ongoing feud between screenwriter Joe Eszterhas and actor Mel Gibson has taken another twist.

Eszterhas has called upon Gibson to distance himself from supporters who've expressed anti-Semitic statements, after receiving death threats and hate mail from some people who have apparently sided with Gibson in the bitter rift between him and Eszterhas.

"Many of Mel Gibson's supporters in chat rooms and on websites have posted anti-Semitic comments. I've received hate mail and death threats. I've had to ask our local police department to pay special attention to my family's safety," Eszterhas told TheWrap in a statement.

"I call upon my fellow Catholic, Mel Gibson, to disavow himself from supporters who are anti-Semites," Eszterhas continued.

Eszterhas' spokesman, Stephen Jaffe, told TheWrap that law enforcement is investigating the threats against Eszterhas, which have come both over the Internet and through more personal means.

Joe Eszterhas Pens a Mel Gibson Tell-All eBook: ‘Heaven and Mel’ (Exclusive)

Joe Eszterhas isn't done with Mel Gibson just yet.

The screenwriter has written "Heaven and Mel," an eBook recounting in colorful detail his relationship with the disgraced director that Amazon will release on June 6, TheWrap has learned.

"I can't remember ever reading a more haunting, nuanced portrait of a Hollywood superstar in decline," Dave Blum, editor of Kindle Singles, told TheWrap exclusively. "This is an eyewitness account by a gifted storyteller of a man of faith at war with his demons. In the end, the demons win."

Amazon contacted Eszterhas after he released to TheWrap a tape of Gibson ranting violently during a dinner at his home in Costa Rica.

"On a human level it's a great story, and it can't be told in a nine-page letter," Eszterhas told TheWrap. "Much of it is amusing, some of it is very serious and has to do with anti-Semitism and questions of values. But mostly it's just very human. I view it as a terrific tale."

A spokesman for Mel Gibson could not immediately be reached for comment.
